Summer Intern Training Series on Sexual & Reproductive Health & HIV/AIDS

Today’s lesson: Female & Male Condoms: Keys to Comprehensive Prevention: Sponsored by CHANGE (Center for Health & Gender Equity)

Our friends from Metro Teen AIDS led a session on Male Condoms

which as a seasoned condom demo veteran.. was fun to be on the audience side…

and CHANGE spoke on Female Condoms, and really who knew there were more than just the FC1 & FC2?

the FC2 is the only FDA approved female condom, however in other countries there is the “Reddy Condom” and condom panties; and now there is the PATH condom which has used input from “users” to help aid in usability and design and is undergoing final development stages.

the topic of condoms for today was a great kick-off for the series that will end in an Advocacy Day at the Hill… as many of us start and frame our sexual health discussions with condoms, in the domestic and international context… we need to think about the health, access and usability to know if these tools can be effective in aiding in prevention of HIV & STD transmission and pregnancy prevention…

Digital Capital Week Closing Party : Dance Your A$$ Off!

21 Jun

DC Digital Capital Week’s Closing Party was an incredible end to an educational, entertaining, enlightening week of networking, conferencing and computing…

As the first music venue we (JV & Kim) visited in DC, we were very excited for live music and cool new club to see; 9:30 did not disappoint!  We arrived to catch the last song of Lucky Dub, a funky reggae-rock band that reminded us of Public Property, a similar styled Iowa City band we love.  After grabbing a drink from the bar, we stood on the balcony to watch The Very Small, which provided a great vantage point to check out the bands and folks below.  The following artist, Amber Dutton, performed ahead of a breakdance video, two dance crews, and GI Joe PSAs…wft!?!?  Then next two bands were fantastic!  McWorm was a mix of 80’s, Girl Talk, and reggae…great stage presence, vocals, and supporting musicians.  16 Large, the best band of the night, played synth heavy, retro-inspired dance music made up of two musicians and two dancers.  They threw down a very large sound by adding layers of vocals and hot beats, amazing!  We caught Vedet (awesome) and Stout Cortez (unexpected, but good) before catching the metro home.  9:30 certainly didn’t disappoint and we are amped to go back soon.  The bands that played were all selected based on voting on the for the techArts Closing Party website, and were solid choices.  Overall, it was a great night out and a fun introduction to the DC music scene.

Thanks to all the hard work of istrategy labs, shiney heart ventures and everyone who made DC Week such a success… it was a great welcome to the fun, adventures and friends that DC has to offer…

HIV & NEW MEDIA

  • for those age 13-24 that number is 1 in 100
  • Wards 1, 5, 6, 8 have the highest HIV rates

Tech Cocktail at DC Digital Capital Week- more than just a cocktail party

20 Jun

Thursday night at Lux Lounge, over 600 attendees witnessed a showcase of 9 startups as they gathered to mingle, connect & share stories over a few cocktails & light snacks.

Although TechCocktail itself was Chicago born, this midwesterner was new to the idea… so a chat with Mark Bebawy, Community Manager (for the past 2 years) for the group shed some light… “its more than just a cocktail hour” … startups demo, find missing components and find their niche…  “As compared to other Tech Cocktail events, DC s are more focused on non-profits & government issues … obviously a reflection of the unique DC & technology scene,” – Bebawy.  From their website: “Started as a community building event founded in May 2006 by Frank Gruber and Eric Olson, TECH cocktail has been hosting mixer events and covering technology start-ups across the country with the focus of helping to amplify the local technology signal.”

SeeClickFix – encourages opens government and civic participation through simple tasks such as reporting a pothole.

Structo – cloud user input for web applications. Build your application faster.

Better Human Race – Social Good+Social Media =Stream of Social Consciousness. 1 Million People Changing the World By Surfing the Web… Chris Lawson, Vice President of Marketing shared that their org had just launched beta 2 weeks prior to the event! Of the Cocktail event, he said “It doesn’t suprise me that at an event like this, we are getting so many smart and hard questions.”  “We thought we were on an island with the idea of social media for social good; but through DC Digital Captial Week and this event (Tech Cocktail) we are seeing so many people being responsive to this concept.” Given the org launched 2 weeks ago, the next 2 weeks are a big chance for the crowd of socially aware event attendees  to help give much feedback and critique to aid in the potential future growth of BHR.

TBD.com – For the news near you, right now: TBD. …. potentially the most buzz worthy question @lisatella received was “when are you launching!?”

Goodness500 – Ranks the most powerful companies in the world based on corporate social responsibility.

Workforce Growth – Workforcegrowth.com is here to make your existing year-end dreadful review process, exciting and engaging.

Giv.to – Giv.to is a online analytics and engagement platform for causes and political campaigns.

Critical Past – one of the world’s largest collections of royalty-free archival stock footage. Andy Erickson, partner; said the start-up launched 3 weeks ago, although the company has been acquiring content for the past 20 years.  Erickson shared, “this event has netted a postive response and has been helpful in building connections.”

Health-E-Works – Optimizing and customizing emergency health education using video information prescriptions.  Dave Mathison, MD,MBA the Chief Executive Officer, shared “by making videos of perscriptions and after care treatment, it can improve the outcomes for both patients and hospitals.”  Health E-Works won an annual GW business plan competition,  earning them 20k in seed funding… TechCocktail has given the org an oportunity to expose them to people they may otherwise have not met.

The event was sponsored by Bingham and Zenzi.  Advice from Andy Erickson of Critical Past to other start-ups showcasing at TechCocktail, “get here early, and make sure you have a good compelling visual to draw in attendees.”

#140conf aka so much …so little time

18 Jun

“The State of Now” … is the tagline for the 140 Conference, held in DC on June 17 as part of the larger DC Digital Capital Week.

As stated on the event’s website “@ these events we have explored the effects of twitter on a wide range of topics including: Celebrity, “The Media”, Advertising, Politics, Fashion, Real Estate, Music, Education, Public Safety and Public Diplomacy.”  At the DC event seemed to capture most of those in the 28 or so presentations that took place between1-7:30pm (yes, that’s 6 1/2 hours with a 15 minute break!)

@jeffpulver is both genius in this creation & yet slightly sadistic in the conference format… at times several comments through the twitter stream with the hashtag #140conf shared the concern for a much needed break; which came with relief around 4pm with lucious chocolate chip cookies from the double tree… although I jest, at the sadistic nature of the “so many presentations, so little time” format .. but, i get that its a twitter come to life atmosphere… and it served its purpose of well to get the conversation started…

BTW:   “irony” was not lost on me, following the “virtual conversation” via hashtag at a conference about twitter…

Thematicallya consensus floated to the surface;  it seems (so obvious, at a base level) that twitter is about connection and real time engagement … but via the insights, ideas and case-studies of presenters we learned how a secure social platform could be used by the military to share information and save lives [@troopswap] or how in natural disasters it can be used by folks who want to donate their skills, not just $ (@acarvin & @digiphile) … chats on the use of twitter in “cultural capital” education, and how “the mistake is to shut them down (students access to social media at school); we could friend them, see what they are doing and engage, but by shutting them down, we are disallowing us from their space and making it so they have to hide” – (@thenewtag) On a lighter note, @weave & @JustinKownacki shared advertising insight and how social media (in advertising or otherwise) can engage, influence and activate … with the example of  the adorable character @saltyslife … we see how we can even socialize & interact with our favorite inanimate advertising icons…

At the end of the day, its not necessarily twitter that we are gravitating to and enamored with… but rather the connection to something larger than ourselves.. at a visceral level.. isn’t that what makes us human, a desire to connect… to be a part of something, in the social space… it’s twitter today, it was ICQ back in the day… and for lack of Nostradamous abilities … one can only guess what it will be for the future..

Tips & Themes Gov & Org 2.0 Day

17 Jun

Wednesday at DC Digital Capital Week provided some really great tips for novices and social media mavens to improve their organizations impact in the social media sphere of influence…

Often with limited funds, staff time, and even misunderstanding of social media benefits a non-profit org can find it challenging to justify the resources to allocate to social media…  with a couple of tips and tools of the trade shared by our fabulous presenters we can show a ROI/ROE (return on investment/engagement) for those number crunchers and even improve our presence to connect and engage with our community of support.

Advocacy 2.0:

@emanclyde, @TecAccess @RikkiAmos @marcaross

  • Engage or Enrage– how to handle when the public takes your brand/org and makes it their own… speakers in this session suggested that engagement is the key to creating relationships
  • Trust/Influence: our orgs/brands social media presence needs to be transparent so that even if we make a mistake we can allow critics to have their space and maybe both the public and our org can grow from the experience
  • Why are You Using Social Media: before jumping into every network possible strategize and know your end goal
  • Facebook Causes: although some orgs have been successful, the average $ amount raised is $1k, is this cost-effective for your org?

Mobile Fundraising & Advocacy:

@mytext4baby, @snknr

  • Localize your content: when using social media, to connect with your users, know your users and make it local and relevant to them
  • literacy levels in your messages: test your message with a pilot group and think about your message at a 5th/6th grade reading level
  • TEST, TEST, TEST: your message, the wrong information or misunderstanding of the information can spread like wildfire
  • Be Responsive: change if you need to, address issues and keep your eye on your brand/org by setting Google Alerts, etc

Social Media ROI (Return on Investment/Engagement): the “so what” of having your social media presence…

@cariegrls,  @womenwhotech, @starfocus

  1. don’t be afraid to fail
  2. be where the people are – decide on 1 network and focus, using Facebook ads, keep them on Facebook to build a base FAST & virally
  3. stay on top of latest trends (subscribe to industry pubs like Mashable & SmartBrief)
  4. listen (google alerts, tweetbeep, topsy alerts) (build loyalty programs with those already talking the talk about your org)
  5. research new opportunities (like google grants $10k-$40k for free advertising for non-profits; or YouTube’s NonProfit Program)
  6. train your orgs staff (Facebook privacy, etc)
  7. have guidelines
  8. take an integrated approach (replicate all ur events on Facebook , create corresponding twitter hashtags, promote them everywhere in print & online) (“addthis.com” to make everything sharable!)
  9. measure EVERYTHING-google analytics,
  10. executive participation
  11. showcase your success (share your story) (embed and media driven sites… you only have to update once!)
  12. learn from your mistakes

Using Social Media Tools Effectively for Orgs & Non-Profits

@emilyhaha @elstudio

  • twitter is a great way to make friends for your org
  • if you have 2 minutes: retweet, “like”, check-in on 4square
  • if you have 5 minutes: tweet, wall post, upload photos, thank someone, comment on blog (with your twitter handle), add ur org to 4square
  • if you have 30 minutes: facebook/flickr album, blog post, upload YouTube video, check google alerts, involver
  • if you have 60 minutes: write longer blog, twitter list, analytics (google, backtype, Facebook insights, bit.ly click through, feedburner), update wikipedia, Facebook custom tab
  • know & use twitter hashtags
  • Using Social Media to Fundraise: 1. short time frame 2. immediate call to action 3. ability to publicly prove their support 4. all explainable in length of a tweet

do good well

17 Jun

at the end of gov and org 2.0 day … the key take home message was really…

we need to have a plan for our social media; know where our people are and be selective about how we enact our social media plan… just because we have the option to become a part of many social media platforms, does that mean we should? in a word… NO….

we want to utilize our staff time, be consistent with our brand and orgs mission and engage our follower base for whatever our “call to action may be”

… great panels today … 140confernence tomorrow… will you be there? i know i can’t wait to learn more

social media … a mindset & a skillset

17 Jun

DC Digital Capital Week is fully underway … Gov & Org 2.0 day session highlights (background on presenters)

1. Advocacy 2.0: how tech is impacting grass roots: Rikki Amos; Debra Rue; Clyde Ensslin;  discussions on politicos like Rubio & Crist of Florida Senate seat battle via social media savey… Amazing quote of the session {re social media as a game changer} “young people are changing the world too fast” this could be why some folks are missing the social media boat, because they see it as something that is only utilized by young & tech savy… yet as we learned yesterday from our friends at Pew … its not just the kiddos playing with the shiney toys… but real people… adults of all ages turning tech into tools for the way they live.

“… social media makers need to get past controling their content; the group puts the message out and needs to trust that the members will do with it as they please..”  seemed a salient theme of this presentation.. with references to the State Department & Department of Energy having “awesome social media” where-as most orgs can be hindered by LAWYERS and the challenges of letting the user be in-charge of the message… this doesn’t necessarily seem like new info… but worth sharing once again;

this also led to the thoughts on “engage or enrage”  do you partner with those who have taken your brand into their own hands or do you threaten them.. it seemed that the panelist would suggest a draw in your allys and enemies and work to create relationships in a social media; web 2.0 world… you can’t ignore these folks so what better way to deal … than empower them and hopefully ally them to your cause, brand, etc… escentially you win more karma points with TRANSPARENCY, and creating a space for critics … we can all talk and learn from each other …
